Coronavirus update – UC travel to China and Hong Kong suspended & other updates

UC continues to plan for all contingencies as the coronavirus situation continues to develop.

The latest updates are:

  • All UC-related travel to China and Hong Kong by staff or students is suspended until further notice. We will advise when this suspension is lifted.
  • We have created a new email address for all enquiries related to coronavirus, including about health, travel, academic, enrolments or otherwise. Direct all questions related to coronavirus to UCprotect@canterbury.ac.nz
  • Students who are delayed in arriving in New Zealand due to coronavirus  travel restrictions should contact ucprotect@canterbury.ac.nz for more information. 

UC is taking a precautionary approach with contingency plans in place and is ready if the situation changes. 

The Ministry of Health says: There are no confirmed cases of 2019-nCoV (coronavirus) in New Zealand to date but the likelihood of importing a case is high. The risk of an ongoing outbreak in New Zealand remains low, but the Ministry of Health is monitoring the situation closely. If any public health measures are needed for this virus, we will advise. Symptoms
Coronavirus is characterised by fever, coughing and difficulty in breathing.  If you have these symptoms AND you have recently arrived from China, or other countries affected by coronavirus, in the last month, you must contact the UC Health Centre by phone on +64 3 369 4444 (do not visit in person). For after hours assistance call Healthline on 0800 611 116.

What should I do to protect myself?
The World Health Organisation recommends:

  • Frequently clean hands by using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water;
  • When coughing and sneezing cover mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue – throw tissue away immediately and wash hands;
  • Avoid close contact with anyone who has fever and cough;
  • If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing seek medical care early and share previous travel history with your health care provider;
  • When visiting live markets in areas currently experiencing cases of novel coronavirus, avoid direct unprotected contact with live animals and surfaces in contact with animals;
  • The consumption of raw or undercooked animal products should be avoided. Raw meat, milk or animal organs should be handled with care, to avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods, as per good food safety practices.

UC is closely monitoring the situation regarding the Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak that originated in Wuhan, China.

We are taking advice from Education NZ and the Ministry of Health, as well other government agencies in New Zealand and globally that are leading the response. There is no reason for panic and the likelihood of infection in New Zealand is still low, however we need to remain alert and well prepared.
