Eco Week is coming soon! Eco Week is a festival of FREE sustainability events, which celebrate and promote what you can do for the environment, your community and your life.
Eco Week will run from 14-18 September and we’ll be bringing you inspirational, fun and educational events that will not only get you thinking but provide opportunities to Make A Difference, both in your own life and in the wider world.
This is the line up for now (more events to come!):
Saturday 12 September
8.30–5 pm: Te Ara Kakariki planting day (field trip)
We are kicking off Eco Week 2015 with a Te Ara Kakariki planting day (field trip). Celebrate the arrival of spring by planting trees, shrubs and grasses at one of Canterbury’s ecological restoration sites. Keep an eye out here for more information.
Monday 14 September
Lunch time presentation about how sustainability principles could be integrated into the future of UC’s campus in the next 50 years.
Tuesday 15 September
12:10–12:40: Tiny House Tiny Talk
Tiny houses tickle your fancy? Lucie Ozanne shares her research highlights on tiny houses. Psychology-Sociology 151.
1pm-4pm: Tiny House Open Day
Visit real life tiny houses built by UC students!
6pm: What if I Eco My Life?
Brought to you by UC student club Kakariki, this is a workshop that challenges the idea that you need to choose between a great life and saving the planet. Where: The Living Room
Wednesday 16 September
12 pm : Climate Kilometre Grand Parade
Do your #ClimateKilometre en masse with Generation Zero, to raise awareness about the UN Climate Change Confrence in Paris this November. The Grand Parade will feature electric cars, crazy bikes, colourful costumes, and whatever modes of zero carbon transport you like – be creative! Bikes, skateboards, scooters and rollerblades welcome.
Meet at 12pm by C Block lawn to get kitted out, the parade starts at 12.30pm. Treats and talks in the Undercroft lounge 1pm.
5.30–7.30 pm: Eco Week Documentary: The True Cost
This year we are screening the ground-breaking and harrowing documentary “The True Cost”. This recently released documentary film pulls back the curtain on the untold story of fashion and asks, who really pays the price for our clothing?
Thursday 17 September
12.00–2.00: Make Your Own body products & Op-shop pop up stall (Eco Week 2015)
Join in with this DIY Eco Week workshop and learn how to make your own eco-friendly body products. You don’t just save money but help the planet too! And: shop for some second hand threads at Op Soc’s pop up stall. Help counter the true cost of fashion, and buy second hand.
Friday 18 September
12.00-1.00 pm: Fermented Friday for Foodies
Find out why fermented foods are eco-chic power foods! Taste a sample of fermented goods and nip home with a few recipes.
11am-1pm: EWB Paint By Numbers Mural Fundraiser For Gift Of Light
This event is run by the fabulous student club Engineers Without Borders. Pay a koha and help paint a shipping-container-sized, sustainability-themed mural to raise funds for the ‘Gift of Light’ program in rural Cambodia. Run by Beekeeper Global, this program focuses on implementing solar powered systems which provide a safe, clean and reliable alternative to kerosene lamps and car batteries.
