Dorian Liebert – Béla Bartók’s Viola Concerto (Incomplete): School of Music Special Topic Recital

On September 26th 1945 Béla Bartók died, leaving his Viola Concerto unfinished. Within a fortnight prior he had written to the work’s commissioner, the eminent Scottish violist William Primrose, indicating that the concerto was complete, and all that remained was the purely mechanical task of orchestration. Following his death, Bartók’s friend Tibor Serly then took up the significant task of stitching the concerto together from fragments scattered across numerous sheets of manuscript paper, eventuating in the concerto of 1949.
