UC students Allan Taylor and Alex Michel-Smith will guide a leisurely historical bike ride through Christchurch honouring the original all-women Atalanta Cycling Club, which was formed in Christchurch in August 1892.
This was the first women’s’ cycling club in Australasia. Kate Sheppard was a member of the Atalanta Cycling Club, which organised picnics, day trips and longer tours. Dress reformer Alice Burn was also a member of the club.
The ride will start at Kate Sheppard’s house on Clyde Road, travel via Pūtaringamotu Riccarton Bush to the Botanical Gardens, then to her grave in Addington Cemetery and back to her house via Hagley Park.
All cyclists are welcome to participate – no bookings needed. Please bring a bike lock and your lunch if you’d like to have a picnic lunch in the Botanical Gardens at noon.
