Save on Your Summer Gym Membership

Gym memberships are on sale right now – do not miss your last chance to make a difference to your health and fitness before summer.

The Rec Centre has a three-month summer special for UC staff members. These memberships are usually $119, but have been reduced to $89 for the next two weeks only.

Included in the membership is one personalised SteerMe gym programme with one of our fitness consultants and access to all of our facilities, including our group fitness programme. You also have the opportunity to book in for our high value PushMe personal training sessions.

You have the choice to make a difference to your life – to feel more confident, more physically able, to experience less pain and friction in your joints. It is up to you to decide you want to feel the strongest and healthiest you have ever been.

Try Meditation through Yin Yoga

Most of us will sigh a breath of ‘I wish’ at the idea of taking time to relax and meditate. Life, especially at this time of the year, is hectic. But these are the times that we actually need to take time out.

Yin Yoga targets the deep connective tissues of the body, helping to regulate the flow of energy in the body. Relax into passive postures whilst unwinding from your day. The longer time spent in postures allows a deeper, meditative focus.

Expect to experience a calming of your mind and body, increased mobility in your joints, a deeper relaxation, lower stress levels, regulated energy and a better ability to sit for meditation.

During these classes, you will learn tips and techniques to de-stress and calm your mind, and renew your energy at any time of the day.

Prioritise yourself this term, and book in for the Recreation Centre’s Meditation through Yin Yoga small group training course. Running for six weeks, it’s the perfect way to reward yourself at the end of the week. You’ll notice positive changes in yourself – mentally, emotionally and physically.

A stronger and healthier you by summer

We all get a little comfortable over winter; we’ve given into the cold weather, we aren’t exercising, we’ve eaten too much, and our moods and energy has slumped.

The idea of summer being ‘just around the corner’ now seems daunting – but it doesn’t have to be!

Not all of us love exercise, but I promise you there is a way of working out that will work for you. Not only will you keep coming back to it, it will boost your energy, improve your mood, and help you feel strong in your own skin.

This term, try something different – the University Recreation Center has some inspiration for you to work up a sweat this term with a six-week small group training programme.

There is no better way to work up a sweat and wake up for the day than boot camp. Join our trainers for a high intensity combination of bodyweight and functional exercises. Choose between 12 and 18 sessions over six weeks… you’ll be ready for summer by mid-October!

Boxing Fitness is specially designed to get your adrenaline pumping – within the six weeks, expect to see definition in your upper body and core, as well as cardio benefits (without running for hours on end!).

Suspension Training (or TRX training) uses suspended straps to use body weight to functionally train the body. Not only does it build muscle, it builds stability, balance and coordination… If it is good enough for the army, you know you’re in for a great workout!

Not all exercise is running around. Strengthen your mind and body at the same time. Take your pick from Meditation through Yin Yoga, Staff Yoga and Yoga Play – Inversions. The Meditation through Yin Yoga will help you release the tension in your body, helping you to relax. The Staff Yoga is a Hatha style yoga designed specifically for University of Canterbury staff. For those wanting to tackle more challenging variations of yoga poses, have a go at the Yoga Play class. If you’ve always wanted to bust out a headstand – this is the one for you!

Women’s only exercise hours

If you are a female, the gym can be a daunting or uncomfortable place.

Whether for cultural, confidence, or other reasons, it can be the last place you want to go to exercise.

We want you to feel comfortable in a space that is less intimidating, more supportive, and that meets cultural needs.

This week marks the first week of Women’s Only hours at the UC Recreation Centre.

Throughout this semester, Women’s Only hours will be available in specified areas of the Recreation Centre, to trial different times, equipment and the success of these hours to work out the best fit for the future.

Female fitness consultants and instructors will be available during these designated times to provide assistance, exercise ideas and any other questions that you may have. You can also book in for a one-on-one Train Me session with a female fitness consultant.

In addition, the Recreation Centre will offer free Teach Me classes, a small group session with a female fitness consultant designed to grow your knowledge around different methods of training, which can be booked at reception. Female only small group training classes will also be offered throughout term four.

Live your best life

What are you doing right now to live your best life?

It may be cold and it may be dark, but that is no excuse to not live your healthiest life. While exercise may be the last thing on your mind, it can not only make you healthier this winter, but it will also boost your energy and improve your mood… Plus, summer is around the corner, and you don’t want to look back and wish you’d done more!

The Recreation Centre (located just next to Kirkwood) is free to all students and is super cheap for staff – and what better than some events to get that blood pumping?

Ever wanted to ride the Tour de France? Spin is one of the classes to get to – a high intensity cycle class in a party environment (picture party music and darkness). This month, Stu’s 75-minute class follows the replicate stages in the Tour de France, climbing the mountains and racing the flats. Collect stamps, and you could win some great prizes.

There is no better workout than a dance party! Zumba is getting taken to the next level on the 15th of this month – we are turning the Gymnasium into a Glowing Zumba Party. Throw on some white clothes and paint yourself up! From 5.15pm, you can visit our free glow painting area. At just $5 to register, you’d better be in quick!

Life can get a little boring sometimes, so why not try something different? Small Group Training kicks off soon – why not try your hand at six weeks of staff yoga, boot-camp, boxing, meditation through yin yoga, suspension training or yoga play?
