Appointment Dean – Future Learning and Development

We are pleased to advise the appointment of Professor Mick Grimley to the fixed term position of Dean Future Learning and Development, reporting to Catherine Moran, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic. Mick joins us from Torrens University, Australia where he was the Pro Vice Chancellor Research and Dean of Education. Prior to joining Torrens University Mick was the foundational Chair of Education at Swinburne University where he established the Department of Education and developed and led a comprehensive suite of programmes online and face to face. Between 2002 and 2012 Mick served as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in the School of Education Studies and Human Development at the University of Canterbury and is excited to be ‘returning home.’ Mick’s main research area is Educational Technology and he has extensive experience in the development of flexible learning models and has led and developed a number of Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCS).

Mick will be joining UC from 2 June 2020 and will play a critical role in the continued strategy and development of our online learning at UC.

Senior Leadership Team update

At the recent Te Wānanga Kaimahi | Staff Forum on 20 March, our Tumu Whakarae | Vice Chancellor announced changes to the new Senior Leadership Team (SLT) that will best support the delivery of our UC strategy and vision, Tangata Tū,Tangata ora.

With the recent resignation of Alex Hanlon and the retirement of Jeff Field, she has considered the future alignment of teams and portfolios for the new SLT and has consulted with affected staff.

The additions and changes to portfolios are:  

Professor Ian Wright, Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Research will focus on research strategy and now has responsibilities for the Library and Ethics.

Professor Catherine Moran, Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academic also reports to the Vice-Chancellor. She has responsibility for E-Learning, student academic achievement and retention, student and academic grievances as well as records, examinations and graduation.

Lynn McClelland, Executive Director – Student Life, Services and Communications. While the Student Success team will become part of the DVC Academic portfolio, the student pastoral care component  remains and will align with student Wellbeing and Accommodation services will require greater focus and commitment for the foreseeable future.

Darryn Russell, Assistant Vice-Chancellor – Māori, Pacific and Equity, will take a more comprehensive UC wide focus on equity and diversity to bring about a more inclusive UC community where each person feels at home and able to fulfil their potential.

Keith Longden, CFO / Executive Director – Planning, Finance and ITS, will now have oversight of Planning, Financial Services and Information Technology Services. Keith will also lead Risk and Assurance Management.

Paul O’Flaherty, Executive Director – People, Culture and Campus, has assumed responsibilities for Emergency Management, Campus Services, Capital Works and Facilities Management.

We are in the process of recruiting for General Counsel/Registrar role who will work closely with SLT and the Council. In the meantime Paul O’Flaherty is assisting in this role.
