Dr Christian Riffel from the School of Law | Te Kura Ture was last weekend sworn in as the new Honorary Consul of Germany in Te Wai Pounamu South Island, in a ceremony officiated by Gerhard Thiedemann, the German ambassador to New Zealand.
The role is governed by the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, which sees Dr Riffel as the representative of the German government in the South Island. He provides consular services to the German community that includes processing applications for German passports and birth certificates, certifying documents and where applicable, assisting detainees.
