SPRING SMALL GROUP TRAINING AT THE UC RECCENTRE

Our popular Term 4  Small Group Training (SGT) courses are open for registration, just in time for Spring!
These courses are open to everyone (no membership required), so if you’re looking for a bit of extra motivation during your workweek, we might have the perfect solution for you, just over the other side of University Drive!

What is Small Group Training? 

  • Short 6-week fitness courses, focusing on a specific fitness/mind-body discipline. E.g. Boxing, Bootcamp, Yoga, etc.
  • Our experienced instructors work with you, along with the same small group of people each week in a supportive and energising environment.
  • Workouts can be individualised to suit you and your experience, due to the small class size.
  • A great way to remain accountable and motivated to reach your health and fitness goals.

Are you ready to increase your twinkle?

Universities Step Challenge – 10,000 Step Challenge

Just like the Aotearoa Bike Challenge at the start of this year in February, we are inviting you to join in on the Universities step challenge. The challenge has been set by the team at CQ University Australia and they have invited campuses all around Australia and New Zealand to join in.  It is open to all staff, students, and anyone who is associated with UC, with official registrations of the challenge starting on 1 August (SO SAVE THE DATE!)

The challenge is simple, you need to complete 10,000 steps a day from 19 August to 29 September. As daunting as this may sound, it is not impossible. Once you take into account walking to and from office, up and down stairs, to and from meetings, and around the campus, the steps starts to rack up without you even knowing.

So who are we battling against in the challenge of the steps? Well there are a total of 12 universities across Australasia in the Universities Step Challenge.

The Australian universities are:

  • Australian Catholic University
  • Bond University
  • Southern Cross University
  • The University of Newcastle
  • The University of Western Australia
  • The University of the Sunshine Coast
  • The University of Queensland
  • Western Sydney University

The champions universities in New Zealand are:

  • The University of Canterbury
  • The University of Waikato
  • Victoria University of Wellington

Being the only campus from the South Island we need to show the others the true grit of Canterbury walking. We already won the Super Rugby so now’s not the time to slow down. Let’s keep this championship mentality going forward one step at a time as each step is in the right direction for you overall health and wellness. Breathe easy…staff only yoga starts Thursday and it’s not too late to register!

Are you interested in yoga, but want a private space with other UC Staff?  Our UC Staff only yoga starts again on Thursday 28 Feb – register now and find breathing space again.

The lovely Mel Mortiaux will be teaching a variety of yoga styles (hatha/restorative/yin/gentle flow) – this is a wonderful opportunity to experience a range of styles, in the comfort of our new ZenZone.   

The class is limited to just 14 people, so you’ll get close attention and guidance to find the right posture for your body.

The course runs for 8 weeks, on Thursdays at 6.10pm.  It’s great value at just $60, and your family/friends/support person are welcome to join also for $90. 

And because it’s the same group each week, Mel will be able to shape the class around your needs and progress.

Summer Gym Membership Sale on NOW!

Summer has arrived, so it’s time to offer up our Summer Membership specials again! 

Save around 40% on our three month package deal.  It’s a great time to come the RecCentre, over the summer months, we have less people in the gym and classes, so you’ll be able to pop in, get your workout done, and pop out to enjoy your summer evenings.

What’s the deal? Well, as UC Staff, you’ll get three months RecCentre membership for just $89 (usually $119) and we’ll throw in a free SteerMe personalised programme (valued at $25) to tailor a workout just for you. That’s a $55 saving right there!  We’ve got savings for everyone, so even your friends who aren’t UC staff or students can come along.

The RecCentre membership provides you access to a summer group fitness timetable, weights and cardio, and our new studio spaces – the ZenZone, the FunZone and the StartZone. Almost all of our GF classes are free, with a $3 fee for Spin and our new ZenZone yoga classes. These smaller specialised yoga classes are great value, with a limit of 15 participants and use of yoga props to provide a restorative and relaxing yoga experience. Our GF yoga in the gymnasium remains free to all members.
