Why we got involved in Open Day

Last year UC staff member Katie Perry from the HR team volunteered to help at Open Day. Here she shares her experience…

This will be the third year that a team of us from HR have volunteered for Open Day at UC.

It is a fantastic team activity and particular useful for anyone that is new to UC and the student experience as it provides you real-life insight into the aspirations and apprehension of students and parents. Being involved in Open day reminds you of how important it is that we make potential students and parents feel reassured about committing to study at UC. As UC staff, we can provide insight and knowledge about UC and Christchurch by reinforcing that this is a great place to live and study.

The HR team have found volunteering at Open-Day and Orientation incredibly rewarding, and our team of volunteers continues to grow with every event.

So if you or your colleagues are keen to contribute to the future of UC then get involved and volunteer at Open Day!

This year, Open Day is on 14 July. If you are interested in being involved, please check with your manager and register your interest by emailing the Events Team. You could even volunteer as a team.

The day runs from 9am to 5pm and is based in the centre of Ilam campus, with subject and information sessions, as well as tours of the campus, departments and UC accommodation options. The UCSA will also be running Winterlude activities.

Why you should volunteer at Open Day

Professor Gail Gillon, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, College of Education, Health and Human Development writes about her Open Day experience and why you should volunteer this year.

Professor Gail Gillon, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, College of Education, Health and Human Development.Feel like you have the winter blues? Then I would highly recommend that you and your team engage in this year’s Open Day on July 14, and be inspired by potential new UC students.

Last year, I volunteered to help out on UC Open Day and spent a couple of hours talking with potential students in the Information Hub. Chatting with students and their whānau about our high quality programmes of study, the passion and talent of our lecturers, and discussing career pathways from our qualifications was truly energising and uplifting.

We provide opportunities for people to change their lives and to meet their educational aspirations. Potential students who come to Open Day are full of excitement about new possibilities and life at university. It’s great to get caught up in the “buzz,” help answer questions and heighten potential students’ enthusiasm with all that life at UC has to offer.

I would certainly encourage you to talk to your manager or Head of School and see how you can volunteer at  this year’s Open Day. I guarantee it will put a spring in your step!

Open Day – how you can help

Open Day 2016 is coming up on 14 July. This is UC’s key recruitment event for prospective students, parents and whānau, and its success depends on staff throughout UC.

Many staff present on the day and lead department tours. There are also opportunities for staff to contribute in other ways.

You could volunteer to:

  • meet and greet
  • be a campus ambassador
  • drive people on accommodation tours.

Volunteering on the day is a great opportunity to meet future students and to experience the buzz of the Open Day atmosphere.

Open Day – We need you!

UC’s Open Day will be held on Thursday 9 July 2015, 9.30am-5pm, and we need you to help us deliver a spectacular day.

UC staff involvement is essential to provide a friendly and welcoming atmosphere to our prospective students and their families. There are a variety of roles available on the day including meet and greet, campus ambassadors, accommodation tour drivers, survey collectors and department tour guide assistant. Your involvement can be for all or part of the day from 9am onwards. Volunteer with a friend and we will try to allocate you to a role together.

More information on Open Day can be found on the Open Day website. If you are interested in being involved please register your interest by emailing the Events team.
