FREE Cycle Skills Sessions

Want to cycle with confidence? Want to improve your cycle skills, without any cars around?

Join the UC Sustainability Office and volunteers from Go Cycle Christchurch and UC Bike to practice your cycle skills with us. We want to see as many of our staff and students on their bikes this spring, but we want you to feel safe and confident while doing so.

We’ve teamed up with Go Cycle Christchurch to bring you their popular city-wide cycle skills and confidence sessions to our UC staff and students.

What: Cycle Skills Sessions (x2)

When: Friday 5 October

  • 11:00am – 11:45am
  • 12:00pm – 12:45pm
  • Attend one session, or both

Where: Ilam Fields Tennis Courts

Meet us at the Ilam Fields with your bike, and a helmet 10 minutes before the session time. If you don’t have access to a bike, please let us know ahead of time, and we can arrange a bike and a helmet for you.

Who: Anyone who wants to spend more time gaining confidence on a bike, away from the road. We aren’t able to safely teach anyone who has never ridden before – so we ask that you’re able to safely control yourself on a bike to participate in these sessions.

What will I learn? You will be able to practice your road cycling skills, such as cycling in a straight line, looking behind, hand signals, turning corners, overtaking and a controlled zig-zag.

We are limiting numbers to 15 riders per session, on a first in, first served basis. To avoid disappointment please let us know that you’re coming by by emailing sustainability@canterbury.ac.nz, and we will put you in touch with Connie from Go Cycle Christchurch.

What next? Depending on numbers and interest, UC Sustainability may be able to continue running these sessions semi-regularly. As your confidence grows, we would like to be able to progress the skills sessions to include some slow and easy road riding – for example along the city cycle ways or through some small intersections. Please email us if you would like to see this happen.

For more information, see the Facebook event here.

We can’t wait to see you there – keep peddling!

Fair Trade Fortnight celebration – Tasty talk for staff 20th May

Last year’s Fair Trade Fortnight coffee tasting event was so popular, that the UC Sustainability Office is repeating it. This time with fair trade tea. We want to know which (Fair Trade) brands you like best and how it stacks up against other brands.

Speakers will give 5 minute talks on how fair trade makes a difference to communities worldwide and how to order Fair Trade certified beverages through the OfficeMax catalogue. So drop in (even if it is for 10 mins), BYO lunch, and enter a draw to win a goodie bag full of fair trade treats.

When: Friday 20 May, 12pm-12:45 pm

Where: Undercroft 101

Fair Trade Fortnight (6-22 May)  is an annual, nationwide celebration of all things fair trade and the difference that choosing fair makes for millions of farmers and workers in developing countries.

Fair trade – Tasty Talk for Staff

A Tasty Talk for staff provides a chance to celebrate fair trade, with a focus on fair trade tea.

The talk is part of Fair Trade Fortnight (6-22 May) – an annual, nationwide celebration of all things fair trade which recognises the difference that choosing fair makes for thousands of farmers and workers in developing countries.

Katie Nimmo, from the UC Sustainability Office, explains:

What is the Tasty Talk on Friday 20 May (12.00 pm-12.45 pm – Undercroft 101) about?

It is a short, drop-in lunchtime (byo lunch) event, with a fair trade tea tasting and pop up speakers. It is about raising awareness about fair trade choices, on and off campus, and will briefly showcase a couple of student-led fair trade initiatives.  You can drop in for all of it, or just pop in for 10 minutes or so. Enter a draw for a goodie bag for your office and colleagues!

Who will speak?

There will be a few short presentations: Natalie Baird will talk about Trade Aid and tea growing communities, an OfficeMax rep will demonstrate how to order fair trade products at UC, and I will share a few fascinating facts about the fair trade on campus, plus profile a couple of fair trade UC student start-ups: Little Yellow Bird and Mallu.

Why talk about tea?

Coffee, tea, cotton, chocolate, bananas – these are all products for which fair trade alternatives are easily available. Last year we focused on coffee and it made sense to focus on tea next. Tea is consumed in very large volumes at UC, at the moment, however, only 2% of all tea ordered is fair trade.

Any other events planned for Fair trade fortnight this year?

Yes, on the 18th of May there will be a Fair trade market, from 12.30 – 1.30, in the Undercroft, which will have fair trade clothing from Liminal apparel and Mallu, as well as fair trade samples from Jailbreaker coffee and fair trade banana icecreams. There will also be information on where these ethical companies source their products and how you can get involved.
