Kua takoto te mānuka – the challenge has been set!

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge is officially underway!

Are you up for the challenge? Last year, UC staff biked their way to WIN 1st place in the 500-1999 staff category! This year we want to challenge you (and your colleagues) to take part and help us do it again.

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge is a free, fun competition to see which organisation can get the most people to ride a bike during the month of February. Teams earn points for kms travelled, trips taken and for recruiting new riders.

Last year, we had 14% of our staff participating in the challenge, cycling a total of 179,472kms and saving 15,746 kg co2 during the month of Feb!

UC is already signed up, so all you need to do is make sure you and your team are too. Since 2017, over 40 UC groups and departments have taken on the challenge, and there’s some pretty impressive stats in there! Check out all the UC team members and departments that participated in the challenge last year here.

This year, we’ve created a group called the UC Student Team, so our students can also participate in the challenge. If you have any keen cycling students in your network, please let them know (but careful… they might beat us…) Find the Student Team here.

We’d love to see as many of you on your bikes as possible to kick of the New Year, and what better way to get some motivation than a fun challenge? Plus, sweet prizes and inter-department bragging rights are fully up for grabs!

Remember, UC offers heaps of great services for cyclists, including the popular Dr Bike weekly fix-it clinic, our annual Bike Breakfast, new covered and uncovered bike stands, repair stations and more. For all the cycle services, events and facilities on campus, see UC Sustainability’s webpage.

See the Aotearoa Bike Challenge webpage for more information, and to register. Let’s go UC!

Edible Campus Walking Tour

Did you know UC is an edible campus?

Join the UC Sustainability team for a lunch-hour adventure as we show you the best spots for finding lemons, limes, feijoa, raspberries, walnuts, figs, pears, plums and more. The best bit? Foraging is free, fun, and everything can be found right on our Ilam campus!

What: Edible Campus Walking Tour

When: Monday 30 September, 12pm – 12.50pm

Where: Meet the team outside Café 1894 at 12pm. The tour will wind around campus, and will finish in Waiutuutu Community Garden at 12.50pm. If you can, stay on and have a cup of fresh herbal tea or have your lunch with us in the garden afterwards.

Last chance to nominate your sustainability hero!

Get those nominations in quick…  Because today is the last day to nominate your sustainability superhero for a UC Sustainability Award! There are awards for individuals and teams across 6 categories, with the awards being presented by UC Vice Chancellor | Tumu Whakarae Professor Cheryl de la Rey.

What are the UC Sustainability Awards?

The Sustainability Awards are all about the recognition and celebration of all things sustainability – both on and off campus. This is a great chance to acknowledge the hard work, innovation and imagination of many of our students and staff who are working hard to make our world a better (and greener) place.

Maybe it’s a sustainable student-led project, academic or post-graduate research, or a green department, team or a staff project? An eco-warrior changing the world?

Get nominating!

Tell us all about them (or yourself) by finding the nomination form and all the info you need here. Nominations close at 5pm Monday 9 September, with the awards ceremony to be held on Wednesday 2 October in Te Moana Nui a Kiwa, Rehua.

For a recap on the previous UC Sustainability Awards, have a read of this blog here, or check out our Sustainability Champions for some more inspiration.

What does a sustainability superhero look like?

Maybe they are doing research on micro-plastics in our waterways? Maybe they are holding climate challenge conferences, or built a fully recyclable electric car? Maybe they are doing academic research on waterways, biodiversity, or on sustainability in education? Maybe they always arrive to work irritatingly cheerful and refreshed after cycling to work each morning?  They might even be sitting right next to you…. (sipping coffee from a reusable cup of course)

Nominate your sustainability superhero for a Sustainability Award today! Nominations are open from now until Monday 9 September.
