How to Access Your Computer from Off-Campus

IN A NUTSHELL, THERE ARE 2 THINGS YOU NEED TO DO:

  1. Register for Remote Access (click link)
  2. Connect to UC services from off-campus (click link)

If you experience issues with remote access please Log an assyst request and ITS will be able to assist.

To use IT services or resources from off-campus – for example at home or a hotel – you need to use something called ‘Remote Access‘. The term ‘Remote Access’ in the UC context means you are authorised to access IT services or resources when away from the campus.

You will also encounter the term ‘Remote Desktop‘.  In the UC context, this means connecting to a computer or server that is located on-campus.

Step 1: is to Register for Remote Access (click link)

It is recommended that all staff register for remote access, even if you do not expect or intend to use the service, as this will reduce effort needed to get set up should your circumstances change in the future.

Step 2: is to Connect to UC services from off-campus (click link)
using your Personal computer (Windows or a Mac) or UC provided Windows laptop or a UC provided Mac.

Press Tab When Filling In Forms

When you’re filling in an online form and you’re moving your cursor from one field to the next as you enter information such as your name, address, and so on, don’t use your mouse to get the cursor from field to field –

JUST PRESS TAB!

Fill in a field, then press the Tab key: the cursor will move to the next field. Fill in that field, and press Tab again: again the cursor will move to the next field.

Try it. You’ll be amazed at how much this simplifies the laborious task of filling in online forms. This works for most other programs too. (But sadly not all.)

You can also use the Tab key in Excel to move from cell to cell, or in Word tables to move from cell to cell.

Finding Commands or Help in Microsoft Office Programs

Do you ever find that you simply cannot find the command you’re looking for in a program? Or need help on how to do something? 

Well, in Microsoft Office programs (such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc) there is an easy solution right within the program.

Within the program (eg, Microsoft Word), at the right hand end of the Ribbon Tabs, there is a field containing the text Tell me what you want to do…

  1. Click into the Tell me what you want to do… field
  2. Type in what you wish to do
    – The program will list commands relating to your query
  3. Select an option
    or select Get Help on…

Start A Fresh Page In Word

You are working on a Word document…
you are part-way down the page…
and for one reason or another you wish to end that page there and start a fresh page.

What do you do? No, do not hit the Return key over and over until the cursor moves onto a new page!! This leaves a whole lot of blank lines that will haunt you later when you make formatting changes and add other things to the document.

Instead, press Ctrl + Enter

Or:
1. Click the Insert tab
2. Click Page Break

This gives you a new blank page, and your cursor moves to that page. This is the correct way to get a new page,  for the reasons  I mentioned above.

Note: If you need to remove a Page Break – and you will sooner or later – switch on Paragraph marks so that you can see the Page Breaks in your document and delete any you need to.
