UC Education’s new visual timeline

Starting all the way back in 1870, the UC Education timeline is an elegant visual snapshot of the history of teacher training at UC and its forerunners.

Dr Barry Brooker, with a team of supporters, drove this project, which now graces two alcoves in Rehua (between rooms 102 and 103).

The timeline was launched at a recent College staff and student morning tea and featured a number of speakers. Dr Brooker and Dr John Freeman-Moir discussed the merger between the Christchurch College of Education and the University of Canterbury in 2007. They both spoke of the cooperative and collaborative relationship which saw the union of the two organisations, rather than one of competition seen elsewhere in New Zealand.

That same year, Professor Gail Gillon became the first female leader of the college, many years before UC reached a similar milestone.

Today the College of Education, Health and Human Development continues to thrive with ground-breaking new programmes, innovative and collaborative research, and record numbers of students.
