Join us to share your knowledge, discuss ideas with other sectors, take what you learn back to your department and contribute to collaborative action planning to driving change in Aotearoa.

What is the SDG Summit?

This event is the third face-to-face national Summit, intended to build momentum and drive change in Aotearoa towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. This is the first time this is being held in Ōtautahi Christchurch, theming ‘Collaboration for Systemic Change’.

Both days are an action packed programme of keynote speakers, interactive workshops, a community feast and field trips. Included in the programme are a wonderful dialogue between Distinguished Professor Dame Anne Salmond (Auckland University) and our own Sacha McMeeking (Kāi Tahu) on the special place of the SDGs in Aotearoa New Zealand, as well as an engaging session with Climate Change Commissioner Dr Rod Carr.

The focus for the two days is on interactively building action plans that will move our country forward along critical pathways. We’d love to have you there.

With the theme of ‘Collaborating for Systemic Change’, it is important that you are able to attend as much of the Summit experience as possible. This is to ensure we can create collaborative pathways for national and local action beyond the Summit. The most important pieces of the programme for staff to attend are the entirety of Day One, and the afternoon of Day Two. Both these slots are held at UC.

Please visit the event website here for more information and to view the full programme of incredible speakers, session leads and workshop facilitators.

When is it happening?

The Summit is taking place here at UC on 2-3 September!

How to get your free ticket

In order to access this opportunity, staff should first get approval in writing from their Head of Department or manager to attend for the full two days. This approval should be forwarded to sdgsummits@canterbury.ac.nz.

Once received, staff will be sent a registration code for their free registration. It is important that staff register using this code, for catering and seating allocation purposes.

Community Feast

Instead of a traditional conference dinner, this Summit features a Community Feast, which is being held in the central city. We are working with mana whenua, local farmers, the chef school at Ara, food rescue organisations, community gardens, homelessness advocates and others to bring together an amazing event that touches on the SDGs No Poverty, Zero Hunger and Responsible Production and Consumption. This will weave in the themes of mahinga kai, food waste, food insecurity, and food resilience to create an event like no other.

The Community Feast will be held in the central city on the evening of September 2 (day one). Due to the special nature of this event, staff will need to register for the Community Feast separately, for a nominal fee of $5. Registration information for this event will be circulated shortly.

Project Showcase

Do you want to share your work on the SDGs with other participants at the Summit? We have session called the SDG Project Showcase on Day 2 (3 September, in the mid-afternoon) where participants can share ten slides in ten minutes about their SDG aligned projects, research, or mahi. If you would like to use this opportunity, you should register and send your slides to us by  Friday 13 August using this form here.

This Summit is co-hosted by the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University, with support from the partners Christchurch City Council, Ara Institute of Canterbury, Christchurch NZ, Tourism NZ, NZ National Commission for UNESCO, Te Pokai Tara | Universities New Zealand, UC Centre for Entrepreneurship,  Humanitix and others.
