Aotearoa Bike Challenge 2020

What is the Aotearoa Bike Challenge?

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge is a fun, free competition to encourage our UC colleagues to experience first hand joys and benefits of riding a bike. There are lots of fantastic prizes on offer to tempt your team, which will be announced as the Challenge approaches!

How does it work?

You and your workplace team earn points for every kilometre you ride, every day you ride, and for every person you encourage to sign-up (they don’t have to be in your team – they just have to log a ride in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge). The points system has been carefully selected to ensure a fair and exciting competition, and to strongly encourage teams to engage new riders if they want to climb the leaderboard and secure victory.

You’ll compete against other workplace teams of comparable sizes. Ride anywhere, anytime for just 10 minutes to participate. Prizes will be awarded to the top folks in the individual leaderboard categories and some lucky participants will win for certain activities including encouraging other to ride or logging trips. The more often you log rides and encourage others to log their rides, the more likely you are to win a prize!

You’ve got all of February to get out and earn points!

How to take part

Follow these four steps:

  • Register on this website, it’s free. Register here
  • Ride a bike anywhere, anytime for at least 10 minutes during the Challenge (1-29 February)
  • Record your ride on this site and tell your friends and coworkers about the Challenge.
  • Reward yourself and your friends by winning prizes!

The power of Yet

Have you come back with a little (or big) desire to make changes to bring about more wellbeing in your life? Perhaps we can help with that.

First up, i’d like to introduce you to the power of a little word  – yet. Put it at the end of a sentence, and it changes everything.

“I can’t touch my toes…yet”
“I don’t journal…yet”
“I haven’t found an exercise I like…yet”
“I can’t play guitar…yet”
“I don’t speak Italian…yet”

Finding your best wellbeing formula will require a bit of trial and error.   You might find journalling or a self-care routine is enough to put you in your happy place, but you might also find it doesn’t.  Check out these 15 tips to boost your wellbeing  and you might just get some inspiration.

Part of that formula should include some exercise.  Find something joyful, that every time you move you look forward to it, and are perhaps a little sad when it’s over!   This could be outdoors, indoors, at the beach or in the garden.

If you think structured exercise may help (perhaps you love routine, or recognise that your spontaneous nature could do with a little routine to balance you out), then we’d love to see you at the RecCentre.    More than just your standard gym, we offer a big range of activities under one roof, so you can get a taste of what the fitness industry has to offer at a super low price.   Just maybe we ‘ve got something that will excite you!

Right now, we have a 3-month membership special, which runs until 19 January, to help you get started.  If you’re not sure, pop over for a look through, then start with a 2-week trial – it’s free for UC Staff.

Have a happy and healthy 2020!

Bicycle thefts on campus

The UC community is currently experiencing a large number of bicycle thefts. The Security team are working with Police to identify and apprehend the offenders.

If you see any suspicious activity around any of the bicycle stands on campus please contact UC Security on 6111 or 0800 823 637 immediately.

If you are parking your bicycle on campus, we suggest that you use the secure bicycle sheds. These are located at Creyke Road, behind C-Block lecture theatre and next to the Meremere (law) building.

Most importantly UC Security suggest that you use a good quality D-Lock to secure your bicycle. These have proven to be a great deterrent to thieves as all the reported thefts to date have been of bicycles secured using wire rope or chain locks.
