Over 500 reusable masks made for our UC whānau

Over 500 reusable face masks made, and counting!

Over the past three weeks, the Student Volunteer Army and the UC Sustainability Office have worked with over 100 incredible staff and student volunteers to make reusable face masks accessible for our UC community.

From donations of time, materials and sewing machines to mahi from students in CHCH101, and even a guest visit from VC Professor Cheryl de la Rey – we’re so grateful for all the support we’ve received for this project.

The masks have been distributed to the support service teams on campus. If you’re in need of a mask and haven’t yet received one please contact Student Care.

The formal organised mask making workshops are coming to an end this week. However, if you’d like to still contribute to this project we’d love support with making masks from home – all materials provided! If you’re able to make some masks at home please contact the Sustainability Office on sustainability@canterbury.ac.nz.

Me mahi tahi tātou mo te oranga o te katoa – working together as one for the well-being of everyone.

MASK MAKING WORKSHOPS – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

The Student Volunteer Army and the UC Sustainability Office have teamed up to run a series of reusable face mask workshops on campus – and they need your help to make as many masks as possible for our UC community!

The next workshop is planned for Monday 7 September, with afternoon and early evening volunteer shifts available. To learn more and to register for a workshop, follow this link here.

Sewing experience for these workshops are not required (but is of course, welcomed). We have plenty of tasks like cutting, pinning and ironing for the non-sewers out there!

If you are unable to attend a workshop but would like to contribute by donating materials or making masks at home (all fabric and pattern supplied) please contact Chloe on chloe.wium@canterbury.ac.nz

Come along to a relaxed and fun workshop to make a mask for our UC students and staff, plus take a mask home for yourself! Keep an eye out for more workshops over the coming weeks as they are confirmed.

Reusable Facemask Workshops: We need your help!

The UC Sustainability Office and the Student Volunteer Army are exploring the idea of running some facemask workshops in the coming weeks. Our goal is to make a large amount of reusable facemasks accessible for our UC staff and student community – but we need your help!

In order to make these workshops happen, we’re gauging interest from our community for donations of the following:

  • Cotton fabric – of any colour and pattern
  • Any form of elastic or cotton tape
  • Thread of any colour
  • Sewing machines – these will be either a) operated only by you for the duration or part duration of the workshop or b) used by students or staff with sewing experience only.
  • Any time you may be willing to lend or sewing wisdom you are willing to share to help us ensure these workshops are a success!

If you’re interested in donating any of the above, would like to volunteer at a workshop with us or have any questions please contact Chloe Wium on chloe.wium@canterbury.ac.nz.

At this stage we are gauging interest with our community and seeing what resources we have available on our campus. Following this, we will begin to coordinate workshops – so stay tuned!

Please note: prior sewing experience is not necessary for volunteering at this workshop – we’ll need plenty of hands-on help with non-sewing tasks like cutting fabric, ironing and more. Please get in touch if you’re interested in being involved.

If you’re keen to give making one a try yourself this weekend, we recommend using this straightforward and beginner-friendly tutorial here. Don’t have access to a sewing machine? You can hand stitch, or pop in and visit the Te Rua Makerspace in Puaka-James Hight Library!
