Biketober is here – get involved on campus

What on earth is Biketober?

Biketober (Bike + October) is a month-long festival of cycling held each October in Christchurch. It brings together a diverse range of activities and events for everyone who rides a bicycle, for any reason: transportation, recreation, competition, skills development and social interaction. At its core, the festival is about having fun on a bicycle. And spring is the perfect season for shaking off the winter blues and enjoying some sunshine on a bike! Biketober spotlights Christchurch’s great cycleway infrastructure and shows that most journeys can be made easily, safely, and are heaps more fun on a bike.

The volunteer Biketober team have curated a diverse programme of cycling events in our city for you to enjoy. There are guided and self-guided rides, social activities, go-by-bike refreshment stops, bike-repair workshops, seminars, and more. Most events are free. Check out the Biketober 2020 Event Calendar here to see some of the events happening near you!

There’s also the Biketober Passport – you have the whole month to visit the 40+ destinations (local businesses and attractions), collect a unique code from each, and be in to win some impressive prizes.

UC Pedals into Third Place in Aotearoa Bike Challenge

Time to celebrate!

Congratulations to all our UC staff who participated in the 2020 Aotearoa Bike Challenge – you helped us pedal UC into 3rd place in Ōtautahi Christchurch and 5th in all of Aotearoa!

Our 2020 cycling success

  • We had 235 out of 3,421 staff sign up to the challenge – that’s 6.9% participation
  • Together we cycled 49,781 kms during the month of Feb with 28,022 kms being commuter trips
  • And, not only did we clock up some serious kilometres, but our combined efforts saved 6,325 kg of CO2!

So what is the Aotearoa Bike Challenge?

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge is a fun, free competition that encourage workplaces across Aotearoa to experience first-hand the joys and benefits of riding a bike. The challenge is designed so you compete against other workplace teams of comparable sizes, with your team earning points for your rides, kilometres and for every person you encourage to sign up and ride a bike during the month of February.

Huge thanks and happy riding to everyone who participated. We’d love to see you logging your rides again next year – and look out Christchurch City Council and the CDHB!
