New Zealand Sign Language is Essential

NZSL is essential for Deaf people in education, health, workplaces and to be able to participate equally in society.

This year’s theme for NZSL Week 2022 is ‘NZSL is Essential’.

The meaning behind this theme is multifaceted. As you are aware, the word “essential” is well used these days and the Deaf Organisation is drawing on this to put a spotlight on essential workers who are Deaf.

It also highlights the fact that NZSL is essential for Deaf people in education, health, workplaces and to be able to participate equally in society.

To show manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and tiakitanga to our Deaf UC community and those with other impairments/disabilities, we are celebrating NZSL Week at UC.

UC School of Music Lunchtime Concerts

The UC School of Music holds lunchtime concerts every week of term on a Friday at 1:10- 2:10pm in the Recital Room at the UC  building in the Arts Centre.

Group of violin students performing
Head of Performance, Mark Menzies, performing with a strings ensemble

This is an opportunity for our performance students to show case what they have been working on and provides them with the experience of performing in front of an audience and creating a programme.

It is also a great opportunity to open the School of Music to the wider community and let people know what we have happening.

Term 2, 2022 Lunchtime Concert Programme:

6 May – You’ll see even more pianists

13 May  – Our own voices singing NZ

20 May – Composers, electronics and all that buzz

27 May – Even-more-than-contemporary-voices-and-bands
