Vehicle Security on Campus

An important message from the Assistant Director (FM Security) on Vehicle Security on Campus.

The Canterbury region as a whole is experiencing a high incidence of car thefts and break-ins. In the last 6 months (15/05/24 to 12/11/24) 558 vehicles have been stolen in the Canterbury region and we are also seeing an increase in this behaviour in the carparks at the Ilam Campus and the Dovedale Campus here at UC.

This impacts on you as a vehicle owner.

Security Officers patrol campus carparks at regular intervals and suspicious individuals or groups are removed from campus as discovered.

UC carparks are monitored using CCTV cameras and the Security Team work to support Police in identifying offenders through the use of this CCTV footage.

Here are some key tips to help you protect your vehicle:

  • Always secure your vehicle.
  • Attach a steering lock to your vehicle where possible.
  • Do not leave valuable items visible in your vehicle i.e. on the front or back seat or in the footwell.
  • If parking on Campus at night, park in open well-lit areas.
  • Avoid parking in unlit areas, near bushes, or where trees interrupt the lighting.

If you notice any suspicious activity in or around the car parks or roadways, please call UC security immediately on 0800823637.

Please direct any enquiries to fmassist@canterbury.ac.nz

Take care and safe driving!
