Karl Popper Refurbishment Works 3 March – 31 July

Facilities Management Contractor, Modcon Projects, will be undertaking refurbishment and fitout works on levels 1-4 of the Karl Popper building between Monday 3 March and Friday 31 July (20 weeks) to accommodate the Faculty of Law.

The contractor will commence site establishment on Monday 3 March with the installation of scaffolding to the south side of the Karl Popper building. Materials for the works will be transported from the Meremere car park using a telehandler and this will temporarily close pedestrian access.

Construction signage will be in place directing foot traffic and guiding staff and students to alternative access during this period.

Do not enter any restricted or contractor works areas. Please exercise caution around heavy machinery and plant and truck movement and follow alternative access signage during pedestrian walkway closures.

Direct all enquiries to fmassist@canterbury.ac.nz

Thank you for your consideration during these planned refurbishment works.

Update: UCWireless and Eduroam Connection Issues

UC’s Digital Services continues to encounter connection and performance issues with the Wi-Fi network that services both the Ilam and Dovedale UC campuses. You may have been experiencing issues with connecting, or staying connected to, the UCWireless and Eduroam networks.

Digital Services is working quickly to resolve this issue to ensure the Wi-Fi networks can support you and your studies while on campus. They currently don’t have a timeline for when these issues will be resolved.

Digital Services sincerely apologise for any disruption this has caused to the start of your semester here at UC. We will continue to update you here, on the Tūpono blog.

Ramadan & Uni Life: Strategies to stay energised, focused and balanced

Kia ora and السلام عليكم,

As we enter the sacred month of Ramadan, we acknowledge the significance of this time for many of our Muslim students and the balance required between fasting, academic commitments, and overall wellbeing. Whether this is your first Ramadan at UC or you’ve experienced fasting and study before, here are 5 practical strategies to help you stay on top of your studies while observing this important spiritual practice.

1. Plan Your Study Schedule Around Your Energy Levels

Fasting can affect your concentration and energy throughout the day, so consider adjusting your study routine:
* Mornings are key: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “O Allah, bless my nation in their early mornings.” Take advantage of this special time by studying when your mind is fresh and energy levels are higher.
* Take breaks when needed: Fatigue often sets in during the late afternoon—use this time for lighter tasks like reviewing notes.
Use evenings strategically: After breaking your fast (iftar), you may feel refreshed and ready to focus again.

2. Stay Hydrated & Eat Nutrient-Dense Meals

To maintain focus, ensure you’re eating well-balanced meals during non-fasting hours:
* Hydrate strategically: Drink plenty of water between iftar and suhoor to avoid dehydration.
* Eat for energy: Include protein-rich foods, complex carbohydrates, and fresh fruit to sustain energy levels throughout the day.
* Limit caffeine & processed foods: These can cause energy crashes and dehydration.

3. Communicate with Your Lecturers & Tutors

Let your lecturers and tutors know you are fasting, especially if it may impact participation in labs, presentations, or assessments.
* If you need flexibility with coursework deadlines or assessments, reach out early to a staff member to discuss possible accommodations.

4. Join UCMUSA for Community Iftars

One of the most meaningful aspects of Ramadan is the sense of community it fosters. The UC Muslim Students’ Association (UCMUSA) will be hosting weekly iftar meals every Friday, along with additional sponsored iftars on selected days. This is a great opportunity to connect with other students, share your experience, and break your fast with fellow students (this aligns with UC’s value of whanaungatanga).

Iftar on campus:
* Every Friday throughout Ramadan, hosted by UCMUSA.
Additional iftar nights will be available, sponsored by external groups.
📅 Keep an eye out for UCMUSA’s Ramadan Calendar, which will be available online soon with a full schedule and catering details.
Stay updated by checking the UCMUSA events page.

5. It’s about Self-Care: Mental, Physical, and Spiritual Wellbeing

Balancing Ramadan with academic responsibilities can be demanding, so prioritise self-care:
* Rest when needed: Get enough sleep and listen to your body’s needs.
* A time of increasing Taqwa: Get closer to God through increased worship, acts of charity, and spiritual purification.
* Reach out for support: The Student Care Team and UC’s Muslim Student Advisor are available to offer guidance and assistance.

And there you have it!

By planning ahead, staying mindful of your wellbeing, and engaging with the UC Muslim community, you can successfully balance your studies while observing this special time.

If you need support or have any questions, feel free to reach out. Wishing you all a peaceful and fulfilling Ramadan!
