Find the Sustainability Office by the Beatrice Tinsley bike stands (between Beatrice Tinsley and Eng Core) from 8am – 10am (or until the food runs out).  Make sure to BYO cup for your drinks.

If wet, we still ride – but the event will be held in the Undercroft. Check @ucsustain on Instagram for updates or check out the Facebook event here.

We’re holding this event as part of Biketober, Ōtautahi’s month long cycling festival. Bikes + October = Biketober!   Biketober is all about giving cycling a go. Whether you ride a bike already, would like to try, or just want to join the fun, there will be something for you happening in our city this October. So, grab a bike, view the events and join the fun! Check out Biketober’s website here to learn more and get involved.

World Car Free Day this Thursday

Oil up your bike chain and top up your bus cards… and perhaps score a free coffee as we ditch the car this World Car Free Day!

Every year on September 22 communities across the globe unite to celebrate World Car Free Day — a movement that encourages motorists to give up their cars for a day in favour of more climate-friendly modes of transport and to highlight the impact our transport choices make on greenhouse gas emissions.

Moving to more sustainable transport in and around our campuses is part of UC’s goal of reaching carbon neutral status by 2030.

Keen to get on board? Get some fresh air on a walk, bike, skate, or scoot, or chill out on the bus and avoid the stress of the traffic jam and the cost of petrol and parking. And, if you’re lucky… you might just win a spot prize for taking part!

Keep an eye out for student volunteers handing out free coffee vouchers near bus stops, bike stands and through campus on the morning of Thursday 22 September.

Learn about the different options to get to and from campus here, and together let’s think about how we can put down the car keys for the climate this Thursday!

Cycle with Confidence!

Gain the skills to negotiate traffic with confidence!

Is riding a bike to uni, work, to the local shops or around town your goal? Then this the opportunity to get practical, personalised advice in a safe, supportive and fun environment!

Join the UC Sustainability Office for two free workshops designed to get you out and enjoying Ōtautahi Christchurch by bike (and saving some serious $$) this spring:

Session One | Tuesday 20 September will be covering cycle safety skills and techniques in an off-road setting.

Session Two | Tuesday 27 September will be putting these into practice on the cycleways and quiet roads surrounding UC.

It’s recommended you attend both sessions (if you can) to get the most from the experience.

A few details:

  • Sessions are held on and around UC’s campus during the lunch hour (12pm – 12.50pm)
  • There is no cost to attend
  • No bike? No worries! Loan bikes and helmets can be provided on request.

The sessions will be led by Paul from Odlin Cycle Coaching, run in collaboration between the UC Sustainability Office and the Christchurch City Council.

Registration is essential as spaces are limited. Email chloe.sutton@canterbury.ac.nz for more details and to register.
