A poem by Mikayla Preston, Queen’s High School, one of the Top 10 entries in the Masters category (Year 11-13) of The Art of Science Competition 2020.
Dispatch the dark blanket the lady knit
Soon Heaven’s candles will be lit.
Celestial bodies made of H and He
light up night’s path to guide the likes of me.
Awaken the colours that eyes cannot view,
like the distant Rigel’s colour blue.
Cherish the moment light meets dark sky
for your eyes gaze upon beauty so high.
The galaxy harbours such luminous things
Constellations worthy of gods and kings.
Feel the wonder when science and magic collide
That is the moment when my worlds are tied.
Look far beyond planets like mars
Do you see it?
It’s the awakening of stars.
