Preventative Tree Maintenance Programme Update 27.6.25

Following our earlier notification on Thursday 25 July, FM would like to confirm that the upcoming tree maintenance will include the removal of several trees identified as presenting an Operational Hazard. These trees, despite regular care, continue to pose safety risks due to their location and condition.

This decision has been made to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone accessing UC-owned and operated facilities. We understand that tree removal can be concerning and assure you that each case has been carefully assessed by qualified arborists.

Please refer to the information below for a more detailed breakdown of the Tree Maintenance Programme:

Purpose

The University of Canterbury Facilities Management (UCFM) is initiating a tree management plan, starting in the Arts District in early July, to ensure campus safety and infrastructure integrity.

Tree Removal Justification

  • Safety Concerns: Risk to students, staff, and visitors due to unstable trees.
  • Root Plate Instability: Trees show signs of failure, especially in high winds, due to restricted root growth.
  • Building Damage: Roots are affecting building foundations, causing structural issues.
  • Surface Damage: Roots have damaged walkways and driveways, creating hazards.
  • Roof and Gutter Issues: Overhanging branches are causing physical damage and water ingress.
  • Underground Infrastructure: Roots are disrupting sewer and stormwater systems.
  • Persistent Risk: Despite maintenance, some trees remain hazardous due to location and condition.

Replanting and Environmental Commitment

  • 2-for-1 Policy: Two new trees will be planted for everyone removed.
  • Location Strategy:
    • Preferably near the original site to maintain canopy and aesthetics.
    • Alternatively, within UC waterways’ riparian zones to support biodiversity and erosion control.

Conclusion

The proposal aims to balance safety, infrastructure protection, and environmental responsibility.
