Uni can be an exciting time but it also means navigating a whole new social world. Whether you’re more introverted or someone who usually finds it easy to make friends, building connections at university can be challenging. But having meaningful connections can make a big difference to your wellbeing, helping you feel supported, valued, and like you belong.
If it feels like everyone else already has their group, you’re definitely not the only one feeling that way. It can be awkward, but taking the step of putting yourself out there can lead to something really rewarding.
Where to start:
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, but here are a few great ways to start building social connection at UC:
- Attending classes in person
Being physically on campus gives you more chances to meet people and feel part of the UC community. Try chatting to classmates before or after a lecture as it could lead to a study group or a new friend.
- Join a club or society
UC has clubs for almost every interest, hobby, or cultural group. Clubs host regular events and are a great way to meet people with similar vibes.
- Get involved in social sport
The Rec Centre runs social sports. Joining in is an easy way to meet others and have some fun at the same time.
- Come along to UC Wellbeing events
UC Student Wellbeing and other teams run a variety of events throughout the year that cater to different groups of students. Make sure to keep updated through their socials.
- UniLife or Halls
If you’re in a hall, join in with their events. If you’re not, UniLife,is for first-year undergrads to meet others and get involved in a supportive community.
Just because you’re a student, your social life doesn’t have to be confined to the university campus. There are many ways to connect off-campus.
- Talking with friends and whanau back home
- Connecting with people online, through games or online community groups eg DnD, crafting, or even an online book club
- Checking out events going on outside the university, such as community centres or public libraries
If you still feel a little stuck and would like some support, reach out to UC’s support services. They are here to help you navigate whatever comes your way.
Wishing you all the best on your journey, UC Wellbeing team
