Rec Centre Footpath Closure – 22 September- 10 October

Facilities Management advise that the footpath between University Drive and the Rec Centre will be temporarily closed from Monday 22 September to Friday 10 October while contractors carry out required tree works and in-ground service modifications in preparation for foundation works on the new Student Facility – Takurua.

As part of these preparation works approximately twenty-five trees and shrubs will be removed (refer to the attached area map), and new pedestrian access paths will be formed. To compensate for the loss of trees, Facilities Management has adopted a two-for-one tree replacement policy, with planting decisions to be incorporated into the construction landscaping programme and the 2026 landscaping programme.

Impacted Buildings:

  • UC Rec Centre (SS01–SS04)
  • UC Warehouse (GS51)
  • K1 (GS50)
  • UC Printery (GS50)

How to get around: During the closure, pedestrian access will be redirected via the footbridge adjacent to the UC Health Centre, then along Kirkwood Avenue to reach the Rec Centre, K1, Warehouse, and UC Printery. Wayfinding signage will be in place to guide this route (see attached map).

Stay safe:

  • Stick to marked paths and follow all signage.
  • Don’t enter fenced off or restricted areas.
  • Watch out for contractors and equipment.
  • In the event of an emergency, please follow all staff safety and evacuation instructions.

Please direct any enquiries to fmassist@canterbury.ac.nz.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we progress with the new Student Facility development
