Notification of Ilam Wastewater Works – Temporary Access Re-direction University Drive

From Monday 2 September, the Christchurch City Council will start a significant wastewater upgrade in Ilam that will affect access to and from Ilam Campus.

The works will affect Creyke Road, Clyde Road through to the Maidstone Road / Waimairi Road intersection, and Clyde Road from Hinau Street to Creyke Road, and will be completed in three stages starting Monday 2 September and running until May 2026.

Works Stage 1:  2 September 2024 – December 2025

The initial stage includes work on Clyde and Creyke roads with traffic flowing north one way on Clyde Road and west one way on Creyke Road. See Christchurch City Council’s information here>

How this could affect you:

– No vehicle entry to Creyke Road from the Ilam Road intersection.

– No vehicle entry to Clyde Road from the Clyde Road / Kotare Street intersection.

– Left turn only onto Creyke Road from Montana Avenue, Engineering Road, and Forestry Road.

– On-street parking on Clyde Road and Creyke Road may be reduced.

– University Drive will be closed from Fine Arts Lane to Clyde Road, finishing late September

Regular updates on the project will be communicated here on Tūpono or can be found at ccc.govt.nz/Ilam-wastewater. Please direct any works enquiries to security@canterbury.ac.nz.

Join us at this year’s Volunteering Expo!

UC’s Volunteering Expo gives you an opportunity to connect with not-for-profit organisations around Waitaha Canterbury.

Learn about your volunteering options by coming along to the Undercroft on Monday 5 August between 11.30am – 2.30pm.

The Volunteering Expo is free to attend for all students and you do not need to register.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering offers a fantastic opportunity to engage with your community and make your CV stand out. Here’s how it can help your career:

Learn more about yourself: Supporting a cause helps you learn more about your interests and what you want to pursue in your career.

Gain work experience: Whether it’s in your field of study or a completely new area, volunteering provides valuable work experience.

Expand your network: Build a professional network that can support and guide you in your career journey.

Apply your skills: Use and improve the skills and knowledge you’ve gained from your studies in a real-world environment.

Meet diverse people: Connect with individuals from different backgrounds and become part of a collaborative team.

Get references: Connect with a current reference who can vouch for your work ethic, skills, and attributes.

How to prepare for the Volunteering Expo

Think of how you are going to introduce yourself. It could be as easy as stating your name and year/field of study. Research the non-for-profit businesses attending by clicking on the links below.  Think about the types of questions you would like to ask the non-for-profit organisations. For example:

  • What type of volunteer roles do they have?
  • What skills/attributes do they look for when taking on a volunteer?
  • Where are they located?
  • How do they support their volunteers?
  • What type of training will you receive, and how long does it take?
  • What time commitment would you be looking at?
