In late February, University of Canterbury glaciologist Dr Heather Purdie led a field team on a research campaign to Tasman Glacier in the Southern Alps to undertake data collection for her Royal Society Te Apārangi Marsden Fast-Start project, which is exploring how crevasses influence glacier health.

Special thanks to Paul Bealing, who captured this incredible footage. The field team also included Ben Schumacher, Tim Kerr and Jane Morris.

The team installed four weather stations in and out of crevasse fields, a thermal imaging camera, undertook a drone survey, and deployed a bespoke ‘crevasse pole’. A large amount of data was collected, that will keep the team busy for months!
