Secure your bikes and vehicles

Cycling to campus is a fantastic way to save money, get fit and contribute to a better city. However, thieves can take advantage of bikes that are not properly secured.

Use one of UC’s bike parking facilities around campus.

Secure bike stands are electronically accessed with video surveillance. Simply swipe your Canterbury Card to get access. Please make sure that you still lock your bike with a D lock.

Secure bike stands can be found at:

  • Engineering (Creyke Road)
  • Behind Central Lecture theatres
  • Meremere (Law)
  • Halls of residence – please check with your hall

If you drive to campus, you can make your car more secure by ensuring there are no valuables visible inside the car and by using a steering bar lock as a deterrent.

You should insure all valuable property, including bikes, cars and motorbikes.

Please report any suspicious behaviour immediately to security on 0800 823 637.

Update: UCWireless and Eduroam Connection Issues

UC’s Digital Services continues to encounter connection and performance issues with the Wi-Fi network that services both the Ilam and Dovedale UC campuses. You may have been experiencing issues with connecting, or staying connected to, the UCWireless and Eduroam networks.

Digital Services is working quickly to resolve this issue to ensure the Wi-Fi networks can support you and your studies while on campus. They currently don’t have a timeline for when these issues will be resolved.

Digital Services sincerely apologise for any disruption this has caused to the start of your semester here at UC. We will continue to update you here, on the Tūpono blog.

How to use the free gym and sport centre on campus

Are you ready to step into your health & fitness and join us at the RecCentre?   There’s nothing to pay (it’s student levy funded) and you can get access to a huge range of facilities/equipment, services and group fitness classes.  But first, here are some essentials you need to know:

  1.  Register online before you get here
Take the time to register online before you visit your first time.  This will save you time once you get here, and it will take just a few moments for our friendly team to help get your student ID card connected and activate, so you can have full access to all the cool stuff we have.
  2. Get the UC Rec&Sport Technogym app
After you register, you’ll be sent a few emails from us.  It’s important that you follow all the instructions in them to get the full experience.  One will help you set up your app, giving you even more resources to help you to your goals.
  3. Wear shoes, shirts and proper bottoms
For the health, safety and comfort of yourself and others, it’s essential you wear shoes that covered toe and heel (no crocs, jandals, sandals or birks); shirts are worn, and your shorts, tights or trackies are comfortable and enable you to move freely.
  4. Bring a gym towel & use the gym wipes
Use a small hand towel at the gym to wipe yourself down and stop your excess sweat flinging onto others or being left behind on equipment.   You can use it to lay on your bench before you lay down, creating a barrier between you and the surface.Gym wipes are located all around the facility, use them to wipe down when you finish (and if you don’t trust the person before you, you can use them before you start as well).  They are biodegradable and you help us make the gym more hygienic when we all use them!

Check out all the gym etiquette and how to use the gym safely in our website, and we’ll see you soon!
