Emergency training exercise at UC Rec Centre

An emergency training exercise is scheduled to take place at the Rec Centre on UC’s Ilam campus on Tuesday 28 January from 9am-4pm. The exercise is run by UC’s Incident Management team (IMT) in collaboration with Canterbury emergency services.

What to expect:

  • An increased presence of emergency services in and around the University in Ilam.
  • You may notice Kirkwood field and the Rec Centre signage informing of a training exercise in progress.
  • Police personnel in tactical uniforms carrying training firearms are limited to the IMT exercise site at the Rec Centre. The public will have minimal visibility into the exercise area.
  • There may be some noise during the exercise. There will be no sirens or lights from emergency services vehicles or any noise involving firearms.
  • There will be no public access to the Rec Centre during the training exercise
  • The UC Warehouse will be closed and the logistics team will not be handling any incoming or outgoing couriers.

Impact on staff and students:

During the training exercise the following sites will be closed, 8am-6pm, on Tuesday 28 January:

  • Rec Centre (including its car park)
  • UC Print and Copy Centre
  • K1 Lecture Theatre
  • UC Logistics/UC Warehouse

Online services for the Rec Centre and UC Print and Copy Centre remain available.

Public on-street parking on Kirkwood Avenue will be available.

Please avoid the area around the Rec Centre on Tuesday 28 January so we can run an effective and safe exercise.

Why are we doing this?
We hold regular training exercises as part of UC incident management to keep our community safe by practising our emergency procedures with emergency services. We held a similar exercise in 2014 and since then we have held annual exercises with participation from emergency services.

Thanks for your understanding. There’s no cause for concern – training exercises are a vital part of making sure emergency services can respond to future incidents.  Your patience and cooperation make it possible for us to improve our incident response capabilities.
