Donate blood with UC!

The University of Canterbury is teamed up with the New Zealand Blood Service to embark on a remarkable journey – the Team Red Challenge! This collaboration allows us to make a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals in need while showcasing our unwavering spirit of giving and community support.

The Team Red Challenge is a unique initiative that encourages organisations like ours to actively participate in blood, plasma, and platelet donations. By becoming part of Team Red, our contributions will be tallied under the University of Canterbury’s name, setting us on a mission to save lives and make a difference.

The University of Canterbury is proud to host a Mobile Blood Drive on February 22nd, and March 5th. Be a part of this lifesaving event, where every donation can make a significant impact on someone’s life.

Even if you can’t donate on the day of, all of your past and future donations will come under the University of Canterbury.

Why Donate?
Every donation can save up to three lives.
Blood is vital for surgeries, cancer treatments, and various medical emergencies.
Your gesture of kindness can bring hope and relief to patients and their families.

The NZ Blood Service’s team of medical professionals and volunteers will be on-site to guide you through the donation process. Rest assured, the entire procedure is safe, sterile, and comfortable. Afterward, you’ll receive snacks and refreshments and a heartfelt thank-you.

To ensure the safety of both donors and recipients, please remember the following criteria:
Be in good health and feeling well on the day of donation.
Meet the minimum weight and age requirements (typically 18 years or older, though exceptions apply).
Bring a valid ID or donor card.

Social Sports Semester One 2024!

Are you looking for a fun and social way to stay active at UC? Look no further than UC Rec & Sport’s Social Sport Competitions! We welcome seasoned athletes to complete beginners.

What are Social Sport Competitions?

Social Sport Competitions are a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, get to know your community and move your tinana. Social Sports on offer this semester are Mixed and Open Basketball, Volleyball, Netball and Futsal.

What are the benefits of joining?

  • Whanaungatanga – Meet new people and make friends: Social Sports are a great way to step outside your comfort zone and connect with other students and members of the community who share a love of sport.
  • Kia kaha, kia ora – Stay active and healthy: Regular physical activity is an essential part of maintaining overall wellbeing, and Social Sports provides a fun and engaging way to get your heart rate up and your blood pumping.
  • Mahi tahi – Teamwork: Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, Social Sports are a great way to learn new skills and improve your game alongside friends and whānau in a supportive and encouraging environment.
  • Tākarokaro – Have fun: Above all, Social Sports are about having fun and enjoying the thrill of competition. So come along, join a team, and get ready to experience the best of university sport!

How to get involved?
Registrations are open to all UC students and community users of the UC RecCentre so grab your mates, pick a sport and sign up! Entry of teams into the competition is on a first in first served basis, so don’t delay! Aotearoa Bike Challenge Social Ride

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge officially kicks into gear on February 1st! Boost your wellbeing (and help us climb the leaderboard!) by joining fellow UC students and staff for a gentle lunch-hour ride to celebrate the start of the challenge. Don’t forget to log your ride on the Love to Ride website or via Strava so your kms count!

🚲 Meet out front of the University Bookshop (by the new Locky Dock Stand) at 12pm on February 1st 🚲

The ride will be a gentle meander along the Uni-Cycle, which will take us through the beautiful Riccarton Bush, around part of Hagley Park, and back to campus.

All levels of riders are welcome, but you must be able to safely ride a bike in order to participate. Helmets are required.

Don’t have a bike? Borrow one for free from the UCSA!

This is the first year students are able to participate in the challenge alongside staff! Last year UC came second in Ōtautahi Christchurch and third overall in Aotearoa for our size category 🌟 With your help we can aim even higher!
