Response about campus protest

The University of Canterbury (UC) supports the right of students and staff to engage in lawful and peaceful protest. This right exists alongside our shared responsibility to maintain a safe and respectful environment for everyone on campus, including students, staff, and visitors.

On Thursday 1 May, a peaceful protest involving approximately 40 students and members of the wider community began in a shared meeting and study space on campus. Later, a small sub-group forcibly entered a secured staff work area, disregarding reasonable security measures put in place to protect staff safety. Police support was then requested to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all involved, including staff in their work environment.

In response to concerns raised by the group, the University reiterates that student fees are not used for investing in funds.

UC remains committed to encouraging open, respectful and constructive discourse on campus. We expect all members of our UC community to engage in ways that reflect the values outlined in the Student Code of Conduct and Staff Code of Conduct, which are part of our collective commitment to a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Any students experiencing wellbeing concerns are encouraged to contact Student Care or access other UC wellbeing services. These include the UC Health Centre, which offers physical and counselling care, and our team of Student Care Advisors who are here to support students throughout their time at UC.

Staff looking for support are encouraged to either speak to their line manager or contact TELUS Health

Staff and students can also raise a concern by emailing concerns@canterbury.ac.nz
