10,000 Steps Australasian University Health Challenge – are you in?

It’s Mental Health Awareness week – what are you doing physically to improve or maintain your mental health?

If the answer it ‘not much’ or ‘I’m taking a break’, why not consider walking? It’s easy, it’s free and you can do it alone or with a friend! It is well researched that getting active will help not only your physical health, but your mental health as well! UC is currently involved in the 10,000 Steps Australasian University Health Challenge, and it could be a simple way to get started without going the gym and getting really sweaty!

10,000 Steps Australasian University Health Challenge

So, while it’s called the 10,000 steps challenge, and we’d LOVE you to aim for that each day, you absolutely don’t have to. ANYTHING counts towards our total.  We came 4th last year (by 8 steps!), and we’re keen to make the podium this year, so we need your help!

Fun fact – 10,000 steps was a marketing slogan designed to sell pedometers over 30 years ago, and today, it’s instantly recognised as a magic number to reach for health. But is it the right number for everyone?

One size does not fit all – but every little bit counts!

The guidelines for healthy activity in NZ are 30mins on five or more days each week of moderate activity.  A brisk walk for 30mins will net you around 3,000 – 4,000 steps. Walking from your car/flat to uni and back will get you some more. Taking the stairs instead of the lift – even more. You get the idea. So, making simple substitutions in your day will add up, and take you toward the 10,000 target, which has got to be good for you right? Well, yes UNLESS you’ve got some medical conditions that might make this target a little unrealistic! If this is you, then aiming for 3,000 to 4,000 steps could be a good starting point, and then you’ve reached your 30mins a day.  If you’re at all concerned, please consult with your doctor before starting.

Head over to our website and find out more on how to sign up and how to record your steps or if that’s all a little bit too confusing, contact gary.gin@canterbury.ac.nz

The challenge has started, and it ends on October 11, but you can join in anytime – every little bit helps!

UC RecCentre On-demand is here – exercise anywhere, anytime

Are you struggling to find time to get to the gym, or don’t know which online workout to choose; or maybe they all look too hard or too long?  Maybe you’ve thought about coming to a class, but are a bit nervous that you’re not fit enough?

The Rec&Sport team are super excited to let you know that our new in-app on demand service is now here! You can get moving in the comfort of your home, and even your pyjamas!

What is it?

It’s over 100 classes, ranging from stretching, warm-ups, HIIT, pilates and yoga from Technogym Master trainers. The classes range from 10mins to 45mins, and you can start and stop them to suit.  They’re graded from beginner to advanced, so there is something for everyone. So, you can start your wellness journey by just rolling out of bed and do some morning stretching with your app.  Presto – morning self-care routine – done!

What do I need to do to get it?

As a member, you just need to get the Rec&Sport app. If you’ve already got the app, then update it and the link will appear. You can watch this 3min video that Gary made for you, to show you how to use the app, including how to find the filters.

Is it free?

Yes – for a limited time!  We’re making it free for all members until Friday 16th October 2020. Remember, all students can get a membership with us for no additional cost – it’s funded by your student levy. So, if you haven’t joined yet, head over to our website and get your membership.

What about RecCentre instructors? Can I do their classes on the app?

Soon! Our team will record and upload some content, so you’ll be able to experience our classes at home as well.  A great way to see what it’s like here, before stepping in the door. We’ll also be setting up some livestreams of selected classes, so keep checking in!

See you soon, at the gym or in the app!

What active recreation do you want to see on campus?

Before arriving at Uni, you may have thought that you’d have load of time to hit the gym, get swole or generally be healthier right? The reality of it is often quite different, and there are a huge number of reasons you may have found it difficult to get or keep active once you started university. The team at UC Rec&Sport want to help you with that balance, and we understand that going to the gym is not everyone’s ‘thing’. So, we want to understand what other recreation activity would help you be active for your wellbeing.

Take a 3 min survey and tell us what you think

Yup, just 3mins. It’s all about you, how you feel about exercise, and what active recreation UC can put in place to help you find balance.  What’s more, upon completion, we’ll put you in the draw for a Fitbit Charge 2! We’ll also have some runner up prize draws for 3x $50 Rec&Sport vouchers, which you can spend on merchandise and services at the UC RecCentre.

Simply follow the link to our online survey, fill it out and you’re all done.  The survey closes on Sunday 13 September, so don’t delay!  This survey is ONLY for UC Students.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact kat.henderson@canterbury.ac.nz

Thanks
